Six Week Check-Up

Walter is six weeks old today, and it’s hard to believe how much our lives have changed in just these short weeks.  At times it seems that these six weeks have flown by.  Walter has gotten bigger, he’s more alert and active during the day.  Other times, it seems like six years since his birth day.  Long nights, hours of fussiness and countless diaper changes can make the days seem long.  I wouldn’t trade it for the world, but who am I kidding – trying to calm a crying baby for several hours at 3am is hard on everyone in the house.  But we’re getting through it as a family.  And who couldn’t resist the cute face of a happy baby, when they are calm and actively exploring their little world around them.

Yesterday I had my doctor’s appointment.  My 6-week post-partum check-up went very well.  Everything seems back to normal.  I’m amazed at how quickly a woman can recover from pregnancy and labor and delivery.  I mean, Walter was over 9 pounds and I guess I was technically in labor for 24 hours (my water broke about 1:30am on Tuesday morning and I delivered Walter at 1:27am on Wednesday morning).  I’ve lost almost all of my pregnancy weight (hopefully I won’t gain weight from too many holiday goodies)!  I walked a lot during my pregnancy, which I attribute to my fairly speedy and painless recovery.  And we’ve been on walks with Walter and the dogs these past weeks, which I’m sure has helped.  And I’m eagerly looking forward to getting back into walking almost everyday and hitting the greenway again.

I anticipate the next six weeks to really go by fast, now that the husband and I have (somewhat) adjusted to life with a newborn.  Of course, I would still characterize us as still in a daze, trying to figure out how to be the best parents we can be to Walter.  And I know that once we start getting Walter into more of a schedule, and our sleep routine gets back in order, the days will fly by.  Before we know it, Walter will be smiling more, rolling over, learning to crawl and eventually learning to walk (and all the steps in between).  We can’t wait to experience every milestone.  But for now, we will enjoy the next six weeks that I have left of my maternity leave and hope that we get some good sleep along the way.
