One Month Check-Up

Posted by Melanie on Nov 3, 2009 in Blog |

Yesterday Walter had his one-month check-up at the pediatrician.  We were anxious to see how much he weighed, and even took a bet before he hit the scale.  I guessed 10 lbs. 9 oz. and Jason guessed 10 lbs. 5 oz.  Well, the little man exceeded both our expectations – he weighed in at 11 lbs. 7 oz!  My mom said that she now knows were all my pregnancy weight has gone.  Walter also measured 22 1/2 inches long (he was 21 inches at birth).  He is in the 97 percentile for weight, 95 percentile for weight and 75 percentile for head circumference.  He is a growing young boy indeed!

Walter also has blocked tear duct.  This is fairly common in newborns.  It just means the tears in his right eye aren’t draining and the tears build up in his eye, making it kind of gunky.  The treatment is just to keep his eye clean and massage the area between his eye and the bridge of his nose in order to help unblock the duct.  Hopefully we’ll be able to get it clear in a couple months because it makes his eye look so bad!  Poor kid.

In the world of mommy and daddy, we are still functioning on little sleep.  Walter tends to want to sleep more during the day than at night.  He eats about every 2-3 hours, including at night.  I don’t mind the feedings at night at all, it’s just that he wants to be awake during those feedings when mommy and daddy would prefer to be asleep :)   Our pediatrician said this would get better when he is about 2 months old when his stomach is a little bigger and able to hold a little more milk.  Hopefully this will come to pass and the husband and I will start resembling people again instead of walking zombies.

This past weekend we also celebrated Walter’s first Halloween!  My parents and brother and sister-in-law came over for the day on Halloween and we all ate lunch together.  The weather was warm for the end of October, so we took advantage of the beautiful day and all took a family walk around the neighborhood – Walter in his BOB and the dogs on their leashes!  Walter likes to go for walks, or at least we think he does (he mostly sleeps during his rides).  We had a good time visiting with the family and we’re looking forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas when more of the family can visit.

Molly tended to have blocked ducts–warm compresses tend to help (especially first thing in the morning when it’s really gross).
