Survivor Cary: Week One

Asleep in the swing

Walter loves to be held by his daddy
Little Walter has officially been home with us one week. It has been an wonderful, interesting and challenging week as we all settle into a new routine and become bonded together as a family. How is Walter doing? He is great! This past week, we took him to his first pediatrician visit. He weighed in a 9 lbs. 1/2 oz. which was great (he left the hospital at 8 lbs. 14 oz.). He heart and lungs are good, he color is great and he seems to be healthy and happy.
As typical for any new born, we have some trouble sleeping at night
Walter likes to feed and fuss during the night, which I know is perfectly normal (but it’s sometimes hard to remember that at 3am). The positive side is that he is eating very well, so I know that means he is a growing boy. Around two weeks of age, most babies have a growth spurt and require constant feeding. Walter will be two weeks old this Wednesday, so I think we’re starting to head into another “cluster” feeding schedule.
Jason and I are doing well. We’re both a little (sometimes a lot) sleep deprived, but we’re learning to value naps more than ever. Everything is just a little harder when you have a baby, and it takes twice as long. Cooking dinner takes a little longer (even just reheating leftovers). My desire to take a shower can sometimes be put off by hours depending on Walter’s schedule. Jason has been running a lot of errands because I wasn’t able to drive the first week and it’s easier for me to be at home in case Walter needs to eat. And I think it took us longer to get out of the house the other day for our walk than the time we actually spent walking.
But for everything that is twice as hard or takes twice as long, everything is twice as better because we have Walter. He is such a joy and a blessing in our lives, and we love him so very much. He has the cutest face, curious eyes and a smile we can’t wait to see. Loving a child is such a unique and wonderful love, and we can’t imagine our lives now without our son.
We have survived week one, and we are eagerly looking forward to the many weeks, months and years ahead raising our little man.

that was funny what you said about the walk. BUT, it is also so true! I complain about packing a lunch for my 16 year old, and it takes me less than 3 minutes with all the “lunch box” conveniences these days. I can’t imagine packing a diaper bag again with all there is to remember! “You just never know” takes on a whole new meaning!
I can’t wait to see him and hold him again. And, guys, seriously, don’t worry about how the house looks, if the grass is a little high…whatever! TAKE THOSE NAPS!
