Happy Birthday To Me!

Posted by Melanie on Jun 10, 2009 in Blog |

Today is my birthday!

The day started like any other.  I got up early to walk the dogs before work.  Work was pretty normal.  I received a lot of nice messages on my Facebook page and “happy birthday!” greetings at work.  My dad even called me at work to wish me a happy birthday (and he never calls me at work)!  At lunch, the husband and I met with my Allstate agent to talk about consolidating our insurance policies and then we grabbed a sub sandwich.  The afternoon at work was pretty routine and I headed home about 5:15pm.

When I got home, the smell of cake greeted me at the door!  Yay!  Cake!  And I love me some cake.  My sweet husband spent his afternoon baking me a two layer cake with chocolate frosting – yum!

He even made sure to have exactly 29 candles on my cake.  I’m beginning to understand why as people get older, they wish there were fewer candles on the cake…

…the cake looked like it had the potential to set the fire alarm off.

After making a wish and blowing out my candles (all in one breath might I add – go me and my pregnant self), I opened my presents!  Sydney and River each bestowed upon me a silver charm for my charm bracelet.  It is a small silver circle with their name on one side and a paw print on the other.  So cute.  Sydney made sure to give me a big birthday kiss…

In addition to the delicious cake, my husband gave me some favorite sweet items – moose munch, dark chocolate and Red Vines.  But the best gift was something that I have wanted for a long time…something that I know my mom will be excited to know that I now have…

singer

A Singer sewing machine!  For years I have wanted to learn to sew.  It’s been kind of trendy for a few years now, and I love the idea of being able to make curtains, bags, pillows and who knows what else!  The Singer Esteem II has a decorative stitch dial and an automatic button hole maker.  My mom has a very old Singer that she still loves, so I’m hoping that she give me some sewing lessons soon (hint, hint Mom)!  The husband also gave me a Singer sewing starter kit.  I hope that my first project will be to make curtains for our new windows, including the new nursery!

For dinner, we went to a local sushi/hibachi restaurant.  We have been there several times, and in fact it was the restaurant where we had our first date.  We were looking forward to a nice dinner, and we even had a coupon for a free entree on your birthday!  Of course our luck, the restaurant told us the coupon expired and they would not accept it.  The coupon did not have an expiration date.  And they told us the coupon was old.  Yet, we received the coupon just a few weeks ago.  So unfortunately we paid the full price, but the husband is planning to dispute the charge with American Express.  So, in the end, I think we’ll get our coupon (and then some).  Word to the wise – don’t mess with my husband and a coupon.

Despite the coupon ordeal at dinner, it’s been another great birthday, and I look forward to next year when I turn the big three-zero.  I’ll be 30 and the mother of a nine month old…wow!

Quite an exciting birthday. The ill will caused by the restaurant will cost them much more than the coupon they would not honor. I’m thrilled you are now a sewing machine owner. I bet you’re going to love it. A good beginner project – placemats. And you’ll love browsing in a fabric store. I’d love to give you lessons next time I’m there – I can’t wait to see the new Singer.

Melanie – a belated happy birthday and congratulations on your pregnancy. Exciting stuff! I love to hear about people getting sewing machines! I remember making you a dress or two back in the Coopers Post days. There is a great sewing site you might want to check out: http://www.patternreview.com Lots of sewers helping other sewers.
